Prototype

A prototype is produced to demonstrate the appearance, dimensions and features of the product. It is made in the same (or very similar) material as the finished item and can be used as a model to show to potential customers.

Key benefits

At MotionTouch we aim to maximize the benefits at the prototype stage, save time and money and reduce risk. Here's how:

  • We have extensive prototyping contacts through our network of factories and have a variety of methods we can use to prototype
  • MotionTouch takes responsibility for the prototype and manages the relationship with the factory
  • When possible we use the same factory for prototyping and manufacture - feeding knowledge gained at the prototype stage into the production process can potentially reduce cost
  • The experience gained in the production of the prototype allows the factory to move to manufacture faster
  • We can design specific testing plans for the prototype, to prove the function of the product
  • Our design and manufacturing teams work together to deliver the design, which supports the transition to manufacture

Testing with a prototype

The purpose of the prototype stage is to provide a model which allows the design to be tested for suitability, and highlights the refinements or improvements that may required.

  • The aim is to produce prototypes that function as closely to the final product as possible
  • As production processes cannot be used prior to tooling some aspects of the prototype - such as materials, mechanical/electronic function, appearance or durability - may differ from the final product
  • Once these factors are taken into account however, a huge amount of valuable work, research and feedback can be achieved
  • Batches of prototypes may be produced for field - and usability-testing according to the client's requirements
  • It may be necessary to produce further versions of the prototype before progressing to manufacture

Prototyping is tremendously rewarding and exciting for the client and the team involved in the design
