The process
Rotational moulding is used to create many different, mainly hollow, one piece plastic parts.
Rotational moulding is slower than other processes, such as injection moulding, but has advantages. It is more cost effective and produces less wastage. Excess material can be reused, making it a more economical and environmentally friendly process. Manufacturing larger hollow parts is much easier using rotational moulding than any other process.
Powdered polymer is loaded into a mould. The mould is heated in the oven while it is rotated, until all the powder has melted and adhered to the wall of the mould. The mould must be rotated through at least two axes and at different speeds to avoid uneven accumulation of the polymer powder.
The part is then gradually cooled, during which time it shrinks, so it can be removed from the mould.
