The process
Extrusion is a high volume process used to melt raw plastic material into a continuous form, such as pipe or tubing, plastic sheeting, adhesive tape or wire insulation.
Small beads of plastic (resin) are fed into the extruder. The beads are simultaneously heated to melting point and forced forward, under intense pressure, by a rotating screw.
At the end of the extruder the molten plastic passes through a 'die', which gives the final product its form. Almost any shape can be produced as long as it is a continuous form.
The product is then cooled in a water bath - or in the case of sheeting, through cooling rollers.
