Depending on the project it may be possible to save substantial tooling and unit cost by design change prior to manufacture. This skill-set is focused in reducing cost without change to the required function and quality. The functional requirement and product specification form part of this process.

The second part of this stage involves designing test strategy for the product in production. If the production process has a number of stages or a number of processes are combined then an integrated test system is required. The level of system detail will vary depending on the required quality and the cost risks associated with failure during production.

Electronic products typically have a number of test stages designed into the firmware so that any issues can be spotted at an early stage before costly components are lost.
