Electronic Product Development Process

Our multi-lingual client service team provides support through each stage of the product development process. The team is the crucial communication link between our clients, designers, engineers, project managers and our suppliers, and ensures projects are delivered on time and on budget.

Many of our clients work with us from the initial idea, through design and manufacturing, to the finished product. Below is a brief overview of the complete product development process.

1. Initial Consultation - We will listen to your product idea and expectations and discuss any other pertinent factors about your product.
2. Review Meeting - We will then have a meeting with you, which will include a member of our client service team, one of our designers and an appropriately skilled member of our engineering team, to discuss the complete design requirement and establish all technical and commercial options - for example:
   • Required features and additional 'nice to have' options
   • Potential chip and component selection
   • Potential limiting factors e.g. power requirements
   • Physical package design
   • Manufacturing process
   • Regulatory requirements
   • Potential market size
   The engineer will suggest the best method of manufacture, ways to improve, enhance or refine the product and how to save cost. Once all of this information has been established we can prepare a quotation for you.
   
   Before progressing to the design stage it is likely that a feasibility study and detailed project costing will also be completed.
   
   
3. Design - Once a quote has been submitted and approved, we will take your concept and begin the electronic design. This may involve several engineers. Once the component selection has been made and verified our electronic and firmware engineers will work in parallel. If we are designing an enclosure for the product this work will also be carried out on a parallel path. We use a sophisticated 3D CAD package called SolidWorks. This allows us to build the product in 3D and examine every facet of its features, appearance and structural strength and integrity. These images will be shared with you and we can produce photographic quality images which can be used to review the product with your colleagues and potential customers. 4. Prototype & Testing - This stage is where we produce a prototype of your product to demonstrate its appearance, dimensions and features. There are sometimes limitations with prototypes due to restrictions in the materials and processes that are available prior to full manufacture. Often we will make a 'cheese board' prototype first. This will demonstrate only the electronic functions and will not be to the same scale as the intended final product. Later, we may make a physical prototype to the same scale as the intended final product together with the electronic functions. This prototype can be used as a model to show colleagues and potential customers and can be tested on your target market. 5. Factory & Tooling - Once you have tested the prototype we can move on to finding a sourcing a factory to produce the finished item. In order to achieve a low unit cost and a high quality it is necessary to make a tooling, which can be used for ongoing production runs. For more information visit our Factory & Tooling section.
6. Production - Once production samples are approved production of the final item can begin. Sometimes it is advisable to start with a small production run and increase the quantities once the market takes off. For more information visit our Production section.
7. Business Planning - Correct project funding, branding and marketing is vital to the successful launch of any new product. MotionTouch is able to provide business planning support to its clients as part of an overall design and manufacturing service package and subject to contract.
